The Abortion Pill by Mail

The abortion pill (sometimes called Plan C) can be obtained either through a telehealth appointment with an abortion provider or from certain online sources that mail the medication directly to you.

With abortion by mail, most providers require a telehealth visit before shipping the medication. This process usually does not include an in-person physical exam or ultrasound. However, an ultrasound is an important step because it:

  • Confirms how far along you are (the abortion pill is FDA-approved up to 10 weeks gestation, which is the period of time when a fetus develops inside its mother’s womb, from conception to birth; typically calculated based on the first day of your last period)
  • Rules out an ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside the uterus)
  • Checks for viability (since up to 1 in 4 known pregnancies end in miscarriage). Viability is determined by observing the presence of positive cardiac activity in the fetus upon ultrasound examination.

At Care Net Pregnancy Resources of Warren County, we can schedule a free 1st trimester ultrasounds contingent upon the outcome of your medical intake conducted by our R.N. as part of our free and confidential medical services.

Educational Information re: How Abortion by Mail Works

  1. Book a telehealth appointment – You’ll speak with a provider online and answer questions about your health.
  2. Receive the medication – If you qualify, the pills are shipped to your address within 24–72 hours.
  3. At-home process – You begin the medication protocol at home and follow up with your telehealth provider.
Not every online provider uses telehealth. Some websites only ask you to fill out a questionnaire and then send the medication—no follow-up required. While this may cost less, it can increase your risks. That’s why a pre-abortion decision screening can be helpful. At Care Net Pregnancy Resources of Warren County, our trained medical staff will complete a medical intake and talk through your options, so you have the facts you need before making a decision.

Safety Considerations

According to the FDA, the abortion pill is not safe for all women.

According to the FDA, some women should not take the abortion pill, including those who:
  • Have Rh negative blood
  • Are more than 70 days (10 weeks) pregnant
  • Have an ectopic pregnancy (diagnosed through ultrasound)
  • Have had allergic reactions to abortion pill drugs
  • Have an IUD in place (must be removed first)
  • Have bleeding disorders or take blood thinners
  • Have inherited porphyria.
  • Have adrenal gland problems
  • Are on long-term steroid therapy
Other important safety factors include:
  • Needing a follow-up visit
  • Having quick access to emergency care if needed
  • Having someone with you so you do not go through the at-home abortion process alone.
