Before visiting an abortion provider / clinic in Hackettstown, NJ, take a moment to consider the following key questions.

1. Is the Abortion Provider / Clinic Licensed and Inspected? In New Jersey, abortion facilities are legally required to hold a license and are subject to inspections by state health authorities. However, inspections may not occur regularly—even for licensed centers. You can look up public health records online by searching “New Jersey abortion clinic inspection reports” to learn about the abortion provider history.

2. Who Will Perform the Abortion Procedure? You have every right to ask about the qualifications of the person performing the abortion. While a board-certified OB-GYN is the ideal provider, New Jersey law allows other types of physicians—or even non-physicians in some cases—to carry out abortion procedures. You may also want to check for past malpractice claims or complaints tied to the abortion provider / clinic.

3. What Emergency Protocols Are in Place? Every medical procedure carries some risk. It’s important to know what the abortion provider / clinic would do in the event of a complication. Does the abortion provider / clinic have hospital admitting privileges nearby? Does the abortion provider / clinic have a plan for emergencies? These details matter for your safety; and you, and your life, matter!

4. Who Provides Anesthesia or Sedation? Only trained professional anesthesiologists such as physicians or certified nurse anesthetists should administer anesthesia. Make sure you know who will be responsible for this part of your medical management during your abortion procedure and who is responsible for your anesthesia, sedation, and respiratory well-being.

5. Will an Ultrasound Be Offered First? Ultrasounds are a critical step before any abortion procedure. They help confirm:
  • If the pregnancy is viable (developing normally)
  • The exact location of the pregnancy (to rule out ectopic pregnancy)
  • How far along you are (gestational age)
Since estimating pregnancy dates based on your last period isn’t always reliable, an ultrasound gives a clearer, more accurate picture.

At Care Net Pregnancy Resources of Warren County, we offer free 1st trimester ultrasounds, after an initial intake, and contingent upon that evaluation, at no cost to you.

6. What Kind of Experience Does An Abortion Provider / Clinic Offer in Hackettstown, NJ? When visiting any provider, ask yourself:
  • Does the clinic seem clean, organized, and professional?
  • Are your questions being answered with dignity, care, and clarity?
  • Do you truly feel heard and respected?
  • Are you being rushed, pressured, or coerced into an abortion decision?
Your health should always come first—that includes your emotional health to make a decision that you feel good about in a timeframe that works for you! You deserve compassion—not pressure.   You Have Options. You Have Time. Before making a final decision, we invite you to schedule a confidential, no-cost appointment with our team. We’ll walk you through all your options in a safe and supportive setting—without judgment—and, since all of our medical services are free & confidential, we have no financial incentive in our decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are abortion pills still legal in New Jersey?

Yes. Abortion pills are still legal in New Jersey.

Can my OBGYN give me the abortion pill?

That would be up to your OBGYN. You may be able to purchase the abortion pill from your OBGYN or they may provide you a prescription to purchase them at your pharmacy. Note: OBGYN doctors are not mandated to prescribe the abortion pill.

What are the long-term side effects of abortion?

Consider reading the new study published in July 2025 that reveals data to support how abortion harms women’s mental health. The study points out that women under 25, those with a history of abortion, or mental health issues are particularly at increased risk of being hospitalized for psychiatric, substance use, or suicidal behavior following abortion.

How painful is a medication abortion?

In terms of symptoms, medication abortion has been compared to a miscarriage, which can be very painful. Cramping and bleeding (including passing large blood clots) are the two main effects a woman should expect. These symptoms usually happen after taking the second pill: misoprostol. For some women, the pain may not be much worse than a heavy period, but for others, it may be unbearable (even after taking the recommended nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

According to ACOG, “the most severe pain occurs approximately 2.5 – 4 hours after misoprostol use and lasts about 1 hour”. But keep in mind that everyone is different and that nobody can predict what each woman will experience.

How many weeks of pregnancy can be terminated by the abortion pill?

Medication abortion, also known as medical abortion or abortion with pills, is a pregnancy termination protocol that involves taking two different drugs, Mifepristone and Misoprostol, that can be safely used up to the first 70 days (10 weeks) of pregnancy according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
